Oscar India’s second lead entry ‘2018-Everyone is a Hero’ based on Kerala floods has become India’s official entry for the Oscars. This Malayalam film ‘2018-Everyone is a Hero’, based on the devastating floods in Kerala, has been selected by India for the Academy Awards 2024. Film Federation of India (FFI) has announced this on Wednesday.
Noted filmmaker and selection committee chairman Girish Kasaravalli, while talking to the media, said that the 16-member jury has unanimously selected the Malayalam film to represent the country. Kasaravalli, a well-known filmmaker in Kannada cinema, said he had a long discussion before selecting ‘2018-Everyone is a Hero’ to represent India at the 2024 Academy Awards. “The jury truly represents the film community,” he said.
This film was selected out of 22 films
He further said that the whole of India is represented in it. We are happy that we were 16 members and we watched 22 movies in a week. It was a difficult decision because there are so many good films and we had to analyze which film had better potential. Ultimately, we chose ‘2018-Everyone is a Hero’. Kasaravalli said that the film throws light on ‘Indian ethos, situation and people’.
Has received the Best Asian Actor Award
He said, ‘This is a film that talks about the tragedy that happened in Kerala in 2018. It represents the disaster facing not only India but also the world. This film is excellent cinematically and technically too. The film’s lead actor Tovino Thomas said that it is a time of double celebration for the team. He is currently in Amsterdam for the Septimius Awards where he won the Best Asian Actor award for ‘Everyone is a Hero 2018’.
These films were in competition
Thomas said from Amsterdam, ‘I was very happy last night and even more happy with the wonderful news that our film ‘2018’ has been selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars. We worked in difficult circumstances but it is bearing fruit. This film is now getting international fame. This is fantastic.’ FFI President Ravi Kottarakara said that ‘The Kerala Story’, ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani’, ‘Gadar 2’, ‘Zvigato’, ‘The Vaccine War’, ‘Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway’, ‘Balagam’ (Telugu ), ‘Valavi’ (Marathi), ‘Bapalyok’ (Marathi) and ’16 August, 1947′ (Tamil), were also considered but the jury unanimously chose the film directed by Jude Anthony Joseph.
