Paul Duncan (Greg Kinnear) and his wife, Jessie (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos), are the proud parents of a bright, happy, and healthy eight-year-old son, Adam (Cameron Bright). Paul and Jessie are highly devoted to Adam, and are devastated when he’s killed in a freak auto accident. The Duncans are still stricken with grief when they’re approached by Dr. Richard Wells (Robert De Niro), who makes a startling proposal — Wells operates an experimental fertility clinic, and he’s developed a technique by which an embryo could be created from cloned cells taken from their late son, which would be implanted in Jessie’s womb. Nine months later, Jessie would give birth to a child exactly like Adam in every way. While Paul and Jessie are initially shocked by this suggestion, in time they decide to give Adam the chance to grow to adulthood and they take up Wells on his offer. The cloned Adam is born healthy and content, and all seems to be well until the child begins to approach his eighth birthday, when events take a startling turn.
