A Girl like Mary

When station management suggests that “The Six O’Clock News” hire a female co-anchor for Ted Baxter (Ted Knight), newsroom boss Lou Grant (Ed Asner) has a good idea of the sort of person needed for such a job. His qualifications are simple: The new anchorperson should be “someone like” Mary (Mary Tyler Moore). Summoning up her intestinal fortitude, Mary auditions for the job — causing dissension in the ranks when “Happy Homemaker” Sue Ann (Betty White) also sets her cap for the position. “A Girl Like Mary” originally aired on December 14, 1974., Lou decides to give Ted a female co-anchor. Mary wants the job, but she has to get past Sue Ann first. This episode demonstrates why Betty White won an Emmy for her work in the fifth season. Enid: Rosalind Cash., Lou decides to give Ted a female co-anchor. Mary wants the job, but she has to get past Sue Ann first.
