One in a flurry of western European documentaries – all produced at around the same time – that examine the offbeat and unpredictable courses charted by everyday lives, Dutch director Eveline van Dijck’s documentary Simply Love (AKA Gewoon Liefde, 2007) actually constitutes a long-delayed sequel to her 1993 gender-bending profile A Change of View. Whereas, in the earlier film, van Dijck honed in on a man named Marcel who subjected himself to a sex-change operation and took the name Marcella, this outing focuses on the same individual amid a reunion with his/her teenage sweetheart, Marijke. Incredibly, their love still remains as vital as ever after a forty-year separation. Despite the change of gender, they promptly declare themselves a couple once again, meet one another’s families, and decide to marry- determined to overcome whatever hurdles stand in the way. van Dijck relies on the story to etch a portrait of undying romantic devotion that transcends the boundaries of time and gender.
