Classic film noir thriller. Private eye Philip Marlowe finds himself immersed in a world of duplicity, blackmail and murder while trying to solve a case involving the two daughters of a crippled oil millionaire. He initially finds the younger daughter Carmen drugged and in the same room as a dead man, which in turn leads him to the beautiful but hostile Vivian., Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall. Director: Howard Hawks. Called into a case involving a wealthy family, detective Philip Marlowe discovers blackmail and murder as he falls for the eldest daughter in the family., Summoned by the dying General Sternwood, Philip Marlowe is asked to deal with several problems that are troubling his family. Marlowe finds that each problem centers around the disappearance of Sternwood’s favoured employee who has left with a mobster’s wife. Each of the problems becomes a cover for something else as Marlowe probes., The definitive Humphrey Bogart/Lauren Bacall vehicle, The Big Sleep casts Bogart as Raymond Chandler’s cynical private eye Philip Marlowe. Summoned to the home of the fabulously wealthy General Sternwood (Charles Waldron), Marlowe is hired to deal with a blackmailer shaking down the General’s sensuous, thumb-sucking daughter Carmen (Martha Vickers). This earns Marlowe the displeasure of Carmen’s sloe-eyed, seemingly straight-laced older sister Vivian (Bacall), who is fiercely protective of her somewhat addled sibling. As he pursues the case at hand, Marlowe gets mixed up in the murder of Arthur Geiger (Theodore von Eltz), a dealer in pornography. He also runs afoul of gambling-house proprietor Eddie Mars (John Ridgely), who seems to have some sort of hold over the enigmatic Vivian. Any further attempts to outline the plot would be futile: the storyline becomes so complicated and convoluted that even screenwriters William Faulkner, Leigh Brackett, and Jules Furthmann were forced to consult Raymond Chandler for advice (he was as confused by the plot as the screenwriters). When originally prepared for release in 1945, The Big Sleep featured a long exposition scene featuring police detective Bernie Ohls (Regis Toomey) explaining the more obscure plot details. This expository scene was ultimately sacrificed, along with several others, in favor of building up Bacall’s part; for instance, a climactic sequence was reshot to emphasize sexual electricity between Bogart and Bacall, obliging Warners to replace a supporting player who’d gone on to another project. The end result was one of the most famously baffling film noirs but also one of the most successful in sheer star power., Private detective Philip Marlowe is hired by a rich family. Before the complex case is over, he’s seen murder, blackmail, and what might be love., Howard Hawks’ famously cryptic version of Chandler’s crime thriller about the trail of death left by a wealthy general’s wild daughters. Humphrey Bogart (as private eye Philip Marlowe) and Lauren Bacall exude the usual potent screen magic., After their on screen romance in To Have And Have Notn was cemented off screen, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall re-united with director Howard Hawks for this classic adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s tale, with Bogart as the hard bitten PI Philip Marlowe hired by Bacall’s father to find out who’s been blackmailing him over his other daughter’s (Martha Sternwood) misdemeanours. Crackling dialogue and dead bodies galore contribute to one of cinema’s finest film noirs., A private eye is hired by a wealthy old man to stop a blackmailer threatening his younger daughter. The PI becomes involved with the man’s other daughter as well, and soon finds himself mixed up in a murder., A private investigator accepts a blackmail case of one of Los Angeles’ wealthiest men. His probe leads into a web of lies, drugs and murder woven around his client’s two daughters. But his most startling discovery is his inexorable attraction to one of them., Classic hard-boiled thriller in which detective Philip Marlowe, working for a wealthy family, finds that his growing interest in the attractive daughter threatens to compromise the case. The convoluted story involves big-time gambling, organised crime, drugs, and antiquarian books. William Faulkner had a hand in the screenplay, based on Raymond Chandler’s novel., A private eye is hired by a wealthy old man to stop a blackmailer threatening his daughter. The P.I. becomes involved with the man’s other daughter as well, and soon finds himself mixed up in a murder., Cryptic version of Chandler’s crime thriller. Humphrey Bogart (as private eye Philip Marlowe) and Lauren Bacall work their usual potent screen magic.
