In this history-making episode, Al (Ed O’Neill), Steve (David Garrison), and Bud (David Faustino) are given ample reason to regret their decision to invite Peg (Katey Sagal), Marcy (Amanda Bearse), and Kelly (Christina Applegate) along on a fishing trip in the woods. The weekend is ruined when all three ladies simultaneously have their periods! Listen for the reference to series star Ed O’Neill’s first film Deliverance. Intended as the third-season opener, “A Period Piece” became a nationwide cause celebre when its subject matter ran afoul of the Fox network censors. Ultimately, however, the episode was telecast more and less intact, though its title was changed to “The Camping Show” (a pointless gesture, in that the series’ episode titles were never shown onscreen) and it was aired one hour later than its usual 8:30 p.m. time slot., Al and Steve (David Garrison) mourn what might have been when the women in their lives join them on a fishing trip.
