Into Burning Space
Against a murderous pirate in robo armor, Gene and Hilda demonstrate some very impressive survival skills. McDougal, a bad guy aligned with the Tao pirate gang, is behind the plot against Hilda and her new friends. Swanzo, a gregarious dock supervisor, gives the group some sage advice about making a clean getaway from Blue Heaven, and the departure is none too soon. Attacking grappler ships make this bon voyage quite a bit less than “bon.” Jim takes to space flight like a seasoned veteran and even Melfina gets her feet wet. For about five minutes, it’s all about laser beams, protective shields, and seat-of-your-pants flying just to keep Horus — Hilda’s spaceship — in one piece. The last bit of the space battle involves a humorous first appearance by the super silly Ctarl-Ctarl aliens and their leader, Aisha Clanclan. Risking an attack by the Ctarl-Ctarl, Hilda pilots Horus right past their ship; the space pirates aren’t so lucky. Hilda gets a few laughs at the expense of Gene “The Space Cherry” Starwind. After a brief jaunt using the Sub-Ether Drive, Horus arrives at a distant location in search of treasure. The Tao pirates are waiting and Hilda has to take Gene in hand; several life secrets are half revealed — the conversation is anything but one way. After another brief tussle, Horus and its crew head for Farfalla. Aisha Clanclan gets in hot water with her planetary counsel, putting her future in doubt. Gene has a tough time figuring out what they’re all doing and why it’s even all that important., Gene, Jim and Melfina escape after their victory over the space pirates.
