This uproaringly funny and unerringly cautionary behind-the-scenes document of the making of a musical becomes a ceremonious unmaking-of as egos, budgets and general calamity conspire to ruin the best efforts of all involved in the New York rehearsals for an extravagant, glitzy production., Problems plague a Berlin production of the musical “Body and Soul,” as the film crew hired to document the performance contend with slashed budgets and power struggles., This documentary chronicles the on and off stage problems encountered by director Andre Heller and the cast of the theatrical production of Body And Soul. Heller arrives at a New York City rehearsal hall in a white limousine to discover the production budget has been slashed from 1.6 million to $300,000. Documentary director Nick Broomfield provides narration to the ensuing mishaps of the plagued production. Dancer Mercedes Ellington (Duke’s granddaughter) is hit on the head with a falling camera. As the production readies to open in Munich, squabbling in the group finds Heller sending people flowers to calm angry cast and crew members. The fuses blow on the stage lights, a racist German production executive declares that outside of blues singers and rappers, he hates all black people. The choreographer is exasperated with his dancers and calls them “idiots.” The dancers express their displeasure and complain about the documentary cameras while hamming it up at the same time. The music and dance routines are excellent, but the focus is on the comedy of errors surrounding the production.
