Anurag Kashyap’s upcoming project is action-thriller Maharaja, starring Vijay Sethupathi.

Anurag Kashyap is not afraid to voice his ideas on matters pertaining to society and cinema. The director recently criticised the use of Payal Kapadia‘s Cannes 2024 win to portray India’s collective accomplishments. In a PTI interview, Anurag Kashyap stated that India had not yet provided All We Imagine as Light with the discount that was promised.

Speaking about Payal’s success at Cannes, Anurag Kashyap expressed his opinion, saying, “I get very upset when it’s said ‘India@Cannes‘.” This is a positive reinforcement. many indie filmmakers a boost in the arm, but their triumph is entirely their own. With zero Indian films in the lineup, India had no presence at Cannes. The proper course of action must be taken in dealing with it. Such films—the kind that screened at Cannes—are no longer supported in India.

“Payal Kapadia‘s film happened because of the French fund,” he continued. “India did not even provide the movie with the rebate that was promised. It hasn’t been given yet. Funding for Sandhya Suri’s film was provided by the UK Film Lottery. Funding for Karan Kandhari’s film came from the UK.”

“The Shameless, directed by Konstantin Bojanov, was financed by a firm and was largely self-financed. India offered him no assistance. India simply enjoys taking the lead on numerous projects. They don’t even encourage the release of these films in Indian theatres.” Anurag continued.
“Payal Kapadia’s last film was also a Cannes winner. Has it been made available in India? Two documentaries have been nominated for Oscars. Were they released in India? Things that provide India a lot of soft power and cultural respect are not even supported by the government. Let us put an end to this pointless festivity.” Anurag concludes
In the upcoming crime-thriller series Bad Cop, which stars Gulshan Deviah, Anurag Kashyap will show up as the adversary. Maharaja, starring Vijay Sethupathi, would also showcase him in a negative role. At the Cannes Film Festival in 2023, his anticipated neo noir thriller Kennedy made its debut.
