Actress Makes History as First Indian Actor to Win Best Actress at Cannes Film Festival

Cannes Film Festival : ‘The Shameless’ film actress’s Trailblazing Win at Cannes

Anasuya Sengupta, hailing from Kolkata, etched her name in history books by becoming the first Indian actor to clinch the prestigious Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival. Her remarkable performance in “The Shameless,” directed by Bulgarian filmmaker Konstantin Bojanov, earned her the coveted Un Certain Regard Prize for Best Actress.

The film centers around Renuka, portrayed by Anasuya, who flees from a Delhi brothel after fatally shooting a police officer. Alongside Anasuya, Omara Shetty stars as the love interest of Renuka in this compelling narrative.

Reflecting on her historic win, Anasuya shared her exhilaration upon learning about the film’s selection in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes.

She exclaimed, “I received the news when Konstantin sent me a link to the press conference announcing the Cannes official selections. When our film’s name was announced, I jumped out of the chair with ecstasy!”

In addition to Anasuya’s triumph, two Indian films also made their mark at Cannes. “Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know,” a Kannada short film directed by Chidananda Naik, secured the first-place spot in the La Cinef Selection. Meanwhile, “Bunnyhood,” directed by Mansi Maheshwari, claimed the third spot.

Naik drew inspiration from Indian myths and folktales for his film, aiming to transform them into cinematic experiences. On the other hand, Maheshwari‘s “Bunnyhood” delves into the consequences of lying, drawing from a childhood incident involving her mother’s fictitious appendix surgery.

As the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival draws to a close on May 25, Anasuya Sengupta‘s historic achievement stands as a testament to India’s burgeoning talent on the global stage. With her stellar performance and groundbreaking win, she has solidified her place among the brightest stars in the cinematic realm.
