Cannes Film Festival Updates: Nearly 50 years after its premiere, actor Naseeruddin Shah talked about being a part of the 77th Cannes Film Festival screening of his 1976 film Manthan. The actor described it as a “terribly emotional experience” in an interview with Brut India. In addition, he declared that he had never felt more proud of this movie. In addition, Naseeruddin Shah claimed that walking the red carpet and taking part in the film festival seemed surreal to him.”
Naseeruddin Shah remarked, “It didn’t seem real. I’ve always watched the red carpet event on film or in pictures. I’ve witnessed these stunning women strutting around in their exquisite clothes. I had no idea that one day I would be involved in that. So my wife and I tried to make things as easy as we could. It was also, naturally, an extremely emotional experience. because a large number of pals were in the movie. Girish was my teacher and a friend. He oversaw FTII as its director. Amrish and Smita were close friends. They are all no longer present.”
“So many faces which one had sort of slipped one’s memory,” he said. “To see everyone once more who was taken into the facility, nearly everyone who used to be there… I had never felt more proud of a movie than I did at that moment. This movie has always held a special place in my heart. I was so moved by the experience that I found it difficult to control my tears. Furthermore, I think the movie has endured the test of time quite well.”
The film, which is set in Gujarat, was the first crowdfunded production in Indian history. It was fully funded by ₹2 donations from 500,000 farmers. Kurien had written the screenplay for the film with Vijay Tendulkar.
This year, Cannes Film Festival, Classic section featured only one Indian film, Manthan, starring the late actor Smita Patil. In addition, Naseeruddin Shah, Girish Karnad, Mohan Agashe, Anant Nag, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Amrish Puri were among the cast members.
