From the BBC. For centuries, the Royal British Navy battled in southern waters against traditional enemies, France and Spain. In the first years of the twentieth century, the conflicts of the old British Empire shifted. A whole new threat came from the northeast, as Germany began to build a formidable new navy to match its military ambitions. A naval arms race of mighty industrial nations began.
