SLB’s another biggest historic period drama “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar”, coming on OTT platform
After a long wait and winning accolades and awards for “Gangubai kathiawadi”, Sanjay Leela Bhansali will be back with another masterpiece out of the box “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” on April 2024. But this time, instead of silver screen, the much awaited work of Bhansali is going to release on Netflix as an eight part series.
Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Mitakshara Kumar, “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” is a historical period drama about the courtesans at the red light area of Lahore, presently in Pakistan, during the Indian freedom movement against the British colonialism.
The role of tawaifs (courtesans) will be played by Manisha Koirala (whom we will be seeing on screen after a long wait), Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh and Sharmin Segal.
SLB is known for his unique style of elaborate sets and intricate detail of costumes which are cleverly used in all of his works that makes the picture larger than life. This time also, Bhansali left no stone unturned with this Rs. 200 crore budgeted series. It has been said that the director had been highly influenced by the character portrayal of Meena Kumari in Pakeezah and paid a homage to the film. This claim is not actually untrue, as we see the posters and the latest released song ‘Sakal Ban’.
The quintessential flair of love, lust, betrayal, the royalty of the courtesans of the bygone era, yet the harsh reality faced by the Indians during the time of partition and pre-independence will be aptly justified in the series or not, can only be revealed with time.
