Director Gaurav Madan’s Cinematic Journey Unveils the Intriguing Profession of Death Photography in Varanasi
Director Gaurav Madan‘s latest film, “Barah by Barah,” offers a captivating glimpse into the intriguing profession of a “death photographer” in Varanasi. Film promises to take audiences on a poignant journey through the ancient city’s streets.

Inspired by a chance encounter with a death photographer in Varanasi back in 2018, Gaurav Madan was immediately drawn to the fascinating yet little-known profession. The photographer’s task of capturing final moments at the Manikarnika Ghat, a sacred site for cremation rituals, sparked Gaurav‘s curiosity and became the catalyst for his cinematic exploration.

With a 35-member crew, Gaurav embarked on a 22-day shoot in Varanasi, delving deep into the heart of the city’s bustling streets and sacred sites. Despite the challenges posed by the intense environment, including a dog bite incident and the constant presence of death, the team remained dedicated to bringing the story to life.

“Barah by Barah” features a talented cast including Gyanendra Tripathi of “Half CA” fame, Geetika Vidya Ohlyan, Harish Khanna from “12th Fail,” and others. Through their performances, the film promises to shed light on the complexities of life, death, and the human experience against the backdrop of Varanasi’s rich cultural tapestry.

At its core, “Barah by Barah” explores themes of mortality, regret, and the quest for redemption. The protagonist, portrayed by Gyanendra Tripathi, grapples with the weight of his profession and the inability to intervene in the lives of his subjects. It’s a poignant reflection on the transient nature of life and the inevitability of death, all set against the timeless backdrop of Varanasi.
As the film gears up for its theatrical release in India, anticipation mounts among cinephiles eager to experience Gaurav Madan’s poignant storytelling firsthand. “Barah by Barah” promises to be more than just a movie; it’s a thought-provoking exploration of the human condition, wrapped in the mystique of Varanasi’s ancient traditions and rituals.
The movie, set to hit theatres on May 24 after garnering acclaim at over 40 international film festivals.
