Firoz khan’s role in Anees Bazmee’s 2007 film Welcome became one of his most memorable contributions to the silver screen.
Feroz Khan, a legendary figure in Hindi cinema during the 1970s and 1980s, left an indelible mark with his charismatic performances and stylish persona. Although his appearances dwindled in later years, his role in Anees Bazmee’s 2007 film Welcome became one of his most memorable contributions to the silver screen. What many didn’t know was that during the filming, Feroz Khan was silently battling a terminal illness.
In a recent interview with Lehren Retro, director Anees Bazmee shared intimate details about Feroz Khan’s final days in the industry. Bazmee revealed that despite knowing about his lung cancer, Feroz kept it a secret from the cast and crew. He didn’t want his health to overshadow his performance or the film’s production.
Anees Bazmee reminisced about how he secured Feroz Khan for Welcome. The director was invited to dinner by Feroz after the latter watched No Entry, a film featuring his son, Fardeen Khan. Bazmee, a longtime admirer of Feroz Khan, was thrilled. He recalled, “I was always his fan. I had seen all his films. I remembered so many of his dialogues and he was shocked. He said, ‘Anees, you remember all of this?’ I told him, ‘You have done such great work and we are such big fans.’ So it was a great friendly atmosphere.”
Despite the warm atmosphere and mutual respect, Feroz wasn’t initially enthusiastic about working on Welcome. His reluctance stemmed not just from his health but also from a general weariness with the industry. However, Bazmee’s admiration and persistence paid off, and Feroz eventually agreed to play the role of RDX, a character that became iconic in the film.
Feroz Khan’s professionalism shone through as he chose to keep his illness hidden. Bazmee reflected on this with deep respect, noting how Feroz did not let his personal battle affect the work environment. “He was a true professional. Despite knowing his condition, he came on set with the same energy and dedication,” Bazmee said.
Feroz Khan passed away in 2009 after a brave fight against lung cancer. His performance in Welcome stands as a testament to his enduring talent and spirit. The film, filled with laughter and memorable moments, hides a poignant truth about a man who gave his all, even when facing his toughest battle.
In remembering Feroz Khan, Anees Bazmee and the film fraternity honor a legend who not only entertained millions but also displayed incredible strength and resilience. His work in Welcome remains a cherished memory for fans, capturing the essence of a man who lived for his art, right till the very end.
