Who was Durgabai Kamat?
Durgabai Kamat, born in 1879, studied till 7th standard. She was the grandmother of famous Marathi actor Chandrakant Gokhale and great-grandmother of actor Vikram Gokhale, who worked in ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam‘. Durgabai Kamat was married to a man named Anand Nanoskar, who was a history teacher at JJ School of Arts, Mumbai. It is said that this marriage did not last long and Durgabai Kamat was forced to live alone with one of her daughters.

When for women only the four walls were their world, Durgabai Kamat overcame those challenges and showed courage to work in the film line. The credit for this goes to Dadasaheb Phalke, who laid the foundation of Indian cinema. In this way Durgabai Kamat became the first actress of Indian cinema.

In fact, when ‘Raja Harishchandra‘ was released in 1913, Dadasaheb Phalke got most of the women’s scenes done by men. The scenes were shot, but he was not satisfied with it. He did not feel it was realistic to portray a woman’s character as a man. In such a situation, he started searching for a female artist for his next films. At that time when there was a ban on women even leaving the house, then after a lot of search, Dadasaheb Phalke found his heroine in the form of Durgabai Kamat.

Daughter becomes cinema’s first child artiste
In those days, Durgabai, who had separated from her husband and was raising her daughter alone, did not have much respect in the society. Then, after much persuasion by Dadasaheb Phalke, she agreed to work in films and thus became the first actress of Indian cinema. Durgabai Kamat‘s first film was ‘Mohini Bhasmasur’. In this movie, she played the role of Parvati, while her daughter Kamlabai played the role of Mohini. In this way Kamlabai became the first child artist of Indian cinema.

Difficulties increased after acting
When ‘Mohini Bhasmasur‘ was released, the society boycotted Durgabai. Also boycotted his film. Then Durgabai’s film opportunities also reduced. Therefore, to survive he had to do other work in between.

Worked in 70 films, said goodbye at the age of 117
Durgabai Kamat had worked in about 70 films. His last movie is said to be ‘Gahrai’ released in 1980. Durgabai Kamat died at the age of 117 in Pune.
