Nella speranza di poter avere maggiore indulgenza, Barney seduce la professoressa di Marshall. Intanto, Lily accetta di lavorare come segretaria nell’ufficio di Ted., Il nuovo appartamento di Lily si rivela una topaia nel vero senso del termine e così Barney la ospita di malavoglia per un paio di giorni. Ben presto scopre, però, che la presenza di Lily è un ottimo deterrente per le ragazze che vorrebbero piantare le tende a casa sua: quando la vedono la scambiano per sua moglie e scappano inorridite. La convivenza, tuttavia, finisce per essere così gradevole che Barney teme di essere scivolato senza accorgersene in un clone dell’odiato rapporto di coppia e caccia Lily, che torna nella sua topaia.
