Robin si chiede i motivi della relazione tra Barney e Patrice, mentre la madre vedova di Marshall inizia a uscire con un altro uomo; ma il figlio pensa che potrebbe essere un malintenzionato…., La mamma di Marshall arriva a New York e il figlio vorrebbe ospitarla, anche se Lily è contraria, visto che con loro vive già il padre di lei. Ted si rifiuta di prestare all’amico un materassino, accusandolo di non rendere mai quello che gli presta, come anche il resto della gang. Barney, intanto, continua a uscire con Patrice con orrore da parte di Robin che non crede che sia davvero attratto dalla collega. Decide, allora di rubare il Playbook dell’amico per mostrarglielo e farla rinsavire. Ma Barney sopraggiunge proprio mentre Robin è nell’appartamento e si nasconde nel suo armadio. Ted, nel tentativo di liberarla, deve nascondersi nel ripostiglio e non farsi vedere dall’amico. Con gran sorpresa di Robin anche Lily si trova nell’appartamento di Barney. Intanto, Marshall ha scoperto che la madre, Judy, e il suocero, Mickey…
