Maharaj: The film is directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra and is based on the 1862 Maharaj Libel Case.
Maharaj, which marks the acting debut of superstar Aamir Khan‘s son Junaid Khan, will be available to stream on Netflix starting on June 14.
The pre-independence-era film, which is produced by Aditya Chopra under YRF Entertainment, also features Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey, and Sharvari in a cameo role.
Based on the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, the movie was directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra, well known for his work on the Rani Mukerji film Hichki.
Netflix sent a press release on Wednesday stating that the film centres on journalist and social reformer Karsandas Mulji, who was a trailblazing supporter of women’s rights and social reform.
As a student at Mumbai’s Elphinstone College and a follower of the scholar-leader Dadabhai Naoroji, Mulji spoke for the marginalised, wrote about widow remarriage, and planted the seeds of social change.
“It all came to a head in the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, which was ignited by allegations of misconduct by a prominent figure, the case garnered widespread attention and scrutiny, setting the stage for what many consider to be one of the most significant legal battles of all time,” the streamer continued.
The upcoming movie is a part of the multi-year creative collaboration between YRF Entertainment, the digital division of Yash Raj Films, and Netflix.
