YRF issues a statement when the Gujarat High Court lifts the stay on Junaid Khan’s debut film Maharaj
Yash Raj Films (YRF) issued a statement after the Gujarat High Court lifted the hold on the release of Aamir Khan‘s son Junaid Khan‘s debut feature, Maharaj. Junaid Khan‘s debut film is now available to stream on Netflix. The court ruled that the film, based on the events surrounding the 1862 Maharaj Libel Case, does not intend to offend any community’s sentiments.
In its statement, the YRF expressed gratitude to the judiciary for allowing movie release. The statement stated, “We are grateful to the judiciary for authorising the distribution of Maharaj, a film that honours one of our country’s most prominent social reformers, Karsandas Mulji. Karsandas, a hero and a pious Vaishnav, stood for righteousness, protected women, and defended his community and faith. The movie is an homage to his unwavering fighting spirit and fortitude to stand on the right side of history.
The statement said, “Yash Raj Films has a 50-year history of promoting India, its stories, people, culture, and heritage. We have never made a film that has harmed the reputation of our country or its citizens. I hope you watch Maharaj and join us in praising Karsandas. Thank you.”
Originally planned for release on June 14, Maharaj was delayed when the High Court intervened due to complaints from a group of businesspeople who thought the film would offend Vaishnav religious sensitivities. However, after personally viewing the video, Justice Sangeeta K. Vishen authorised Netflix to proceed with its broadcasting. Along with Junaid Khan, the film also stars Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey, and Sharvari in important roles.
