In this musical Western, Tex Ritter plays a cowboy who takes on cattle rustlers in below freezing temperatures. Horace Murphy. Candy: Mary Brodel. Jerry: Bobby Lawson. Red: Charles King. Blackie: Bob Terry. Directed by Al Herman., Highly budgeted by Monogram standards, this better-than-usual Tex Ritter western was filmed on location in the Wyoming valley. Ritter plays an elk rancher (no kidding) who is plagued by rustlers Charles King and Jack Ingram. When our hero finally turns the tables on the villains, one of them is so nonplussed by his change in fortune that he commits suicide! The film’s wintry setting and its elk-stampede sequences were sufficient to set Down the Wyoming Trail apart from Ritter’s traditional Monogram oaters. The only detriment: many of the exterior scenes were shot at silent speed, resulting in a few unintentionally funny moments.
