A noted comic struggles to come to terms with his need to be accepted as more than just a buffoon in this drama based on the true story of actor and entertainer Dirch Passer. In the 1950s, Passer (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) and Kjeld Petersen (Lars Ranthe) were Denmark’s most popular comedy team, making crowds laugh with Petersen as the straight man and Passer as the clown. While their partnership was a delight on stage, off stage Petersen was arrogant and convinced that he was the real talent of the act, while Passer, a favorite of audiences, was constantly in doubt about his talent and his future. Petersen also had a severe drinking problem which eventually led Passer to leave the act and go out as a solo performer. Passer became even more successful on his own as he was with his partner, but his crippling doubt never left him, and despite his acceptance as a comic, he was determined to prove himself as a dramatic actor, only to find audiences were unable to see him as anything but a comic star. Dirch (aka A Funny Man) was an official selection at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
