Real-life husband and wife Sven Wollter and Viveka Seldahl are outstanding in this touching romantic drama about a composer and a violinist who find love, but are devastated when he slips into the grip of Alzheimer’s disease. Bille August wrote and directed the film based on an autobiographical novel by the late screenwriter Ulla Isaakson., Academy Award winning filmmaker Bille August directs this intimate, emotionally intense work about love, identity and genius. Martin (Reine Brynolfsson) is a middle-aged internationally renowned conductor and composer. During a rehearsal, first violin Barbara (Linda Källgren) mentions a couple errors in Martin’s score, which he accepts with ease. From the beginning it is clear that the two are attracted to each other and soon they begin to have an affair. Not long afterwards, they leave their respective spouses and start a new life together. For the first half of the film, the two bask in each other’s company like younger lovers. Then Martin is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and soon their love is put to the test. Barbara does all she can to help and protect him, but the demands of the disease suck up more and more of her time, causing her to lose her sense of self. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival.
