When the passengers and crew of a jet are incapacitated due to food poisoning, a rogue pilot (who has a drinking problem and is afraid of flying) must cooperate with his ex-girlfriend turned stewardess to bring the plane to a safe landing., Sophomoric, pugnacious and relentlessly hilarious, Airplane! is the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker spoof of airplane disaster films, particularly Airport (1970). It is also the film that made heretofore serious thespian Leslie Nielsen one of the most popular slapstick film comedians of the ’80s and ’90s. The goofy plot centers on the struggle to safely land a jumbo jet after its entire crew is stricken with a case of ptomaine poisoning. The only one who can possibly save them is an alcoholic ex-fighter pilot with a fear of flying. Though his girlfriend, a flight attendant, and a doctor try to help him through his fears, the situation is critical due to increasingly hysterical passengers and the impossibly garbled instructions. Aboard the plane are the usual disaster movie characters (most of them television performers ranging from Barbara Billingsly (“June Cleaver”) to Lloyd Bridges to Jimmie Walker. The final credits are among the film’s highlights. A silly sequel followed in 1982., A traumatized ex-flier boards a plane hoping to win back his flight attendant girlfriend. Meanwhile, the pilots get food poisoning, and someone has to land the jet., A spoof on disaster films. Passengers on a flight from Chicago are poisoned by their fish dinners. The plane must be landed by a shell-shocked veteran who has a drinking problem., Wacky takeoff of aeroplane-disaster movies, featuring an alcoholic former fighter pilot who must fly a commercial plane after the crew gets food poisoning., (1980) Jim Abrahams and David and Jerry Zucker’s film, which launched a thousand imitators, remains the classic mould-breaking comedy. Peter Graves plays Captain Oveur, the stricken captain of a packed plane. Can passenger Ted Striker (Robert Hays) overcome the traumas he suffered as a wartime pilot and land the plane with the help of his ex-girlfriend, stewardess Elaine (Julie Hagerty) or are they all doomed? Verbal and sight gags galore lampoon every cinematic genre, with Leslie Nielsen and Robert Stack among the distinguished cast happy to make fools of themselves. And don’t call me Shirley., Jim Abrahams and David and Jerry Zucker’s film, which launched a thousand imitators, remains the classic mould-breaking comedy. And don’t call me Shirley., Hilarious disaster movie spoof in which a former fighter pilot, who has developed a fear of flying, must take control of a passenger plane to avert catastrophe., With its constant flow of visual and spoken gags, this is a riotously funny parody of many popular disaster movies, including ‘Airport’ and ‘Towering Inferno’.
