Nail-biting drama about the mid-air hijack of a multi-millionaire’s private 747 carrying a collection of priceless works of art. The terrified pilot is forced by the hijackers to fly low to avoid radar detection and, as a result, the plane hits an oil rig and crashes into the sea. As the stricken airliner sinks, its passengers and crew are faced with a nightmare fight for survival., Deep-sea drama centres on the crash of a 747 in the Bermuda Triangle., A plane carrying priceless art treasures is hijacked and crashes into the sea., Victims of an airplane crash are stranded underwater in the Bermuda Triangle., Mr. Phillip Stevens is flying in a load of VIPs to the grand opening of his art collection when a trio of hijackers knock out the passengers with gas and try to steal the priceless cargo of art treasures. But everything goes wrong for the hijackers when the 747 crashes in the Bermuda triangle. While the passengers remain alive in the shallow water a daring rescue operation is planned to bring the plane up without breaking it in two., Art thieves hijack a 747, hit fog and crash into the ocean, trapping them and the passengers under 100 feet of water., You want reality, get on a bus. You want elaborate, big-budgeted escapism, watch Airport ’77. Let’s see…we’ve already had the “bomb or board” plot (Airport) and the “stewardess takes over the controls” bit (Airport ’75). That still leaves us the “plane crashes into the ocean” routine. Better still: the 747 is submerged 50 feet into the ocean, but the passengers are still alive and must be rescued before the oxygen supply ran out. Complicating matters are pair of criminals who’d rather there be no survivors. All-star roll call! Sound off now! Jack Lemmon as the pilot, James Stewart as a billionaire art fancier transporting his priceless paintings on the 747, Christopher Lee and Lee Grant as a famed oceanographer and his alcoholic wife (there’s always at least one boozer on board), Joseph Cotten as Grant’s lover, Olivia de Havilland as an art collector, plane designer Darren McGavin, and George Kennedy as the same guy he played in the first two Airports. While Airport ’77 made less at the box office than its two predecessors, it was still profitable enough to spawn yet another sequel: The Concorde: Airport ’79.
