The tale begins in 1915 as wealthy Roger Grant (Tyrone Power) shocks his old-money San Francisco family by abandoning his classical music training to lead a ragtime band and begin performing in clubs on the notorious Barbary Coast where he meets the fiery singer Stella Kirby (Faye). Aspiring songwriter Charlie Dwyer (Don Ameche) tries to get Grant’s group a break by having a producer listen to them perform. Unfortunately, he is only interested in Stella and offers her a chance to star on Broadway. Still loyal to the band and receiving no encouragement from Roger, Stella (who loves Roger) hesitates to go. It is Charlie who gives her the confidence and fire she needs to go back East. Sure enough, she becomes a big star while Roger’s band continues to struggle. During WW I, Roger joins the army and is assigned to lead a military band that gives a fabulous farewell performance in a Broadway theater. Stella is there, but has no chance to see him because the band heads for Europe immediately after the performance, which causes her to marry the songwriter instead. By the time Roger returns, both Stella and Charlie have become quite famous. Unfortunately, Roger’s homecoming reminds Stella of how much she loved him. She and Charlie amicably divorce and she sets off to win Roger back.
