Desiring only to be a farmer, Karl (Richard Barthelmess), who is in love with his foster sister Lottie (Marian Marsh), is sent by his foster mother Mrs. Brenner (Lucille LaVerne) to Vienna with his foster brother Stephan (Norman Foster) to study medicine. Stephan botches an illegal operation, Karl takes responsibility, and is sent to prison. Later at home, he finds that Stephan has died, and Mrs. Brenner persuades him to pose as Stephan and work as a doctor., A medical student goes to prison for a crime committed by his stepbrother. Upon his release he gains notice after performing surgery on a sick child, but learns he’s not who he thought he was. Based on the play “A Kuruzslo” by Imre Földes.
