His sister has TB and is in the care of his sweetheart, Dr Rajni (Kalpana Kartik, whom Anand later married). When his sister’s treatment requires more money, Madan decides to take work at the Star Club, a notorious gambling den for thieves and crooks. There he attracts the attention of the lovely dancer Nina, who falls for him at first sight… Inspired by Charles VIdor’s 1946 noir-romance Gilda, Baazi (The Gamble) opened the doors for scores of Indian crime thrillers, and kicked off a hugely successful career for director Dutt. Its melodious and popular music was the result of an early collaboration between acclaimed composer SD Burman and poet/ lyricist Sahir Ludhiavi. The movie made Dev Anand an overnight star.
