Taylor gives an outstanding performance as a military commander struggling to save his men in this blistering tale of courage and perseverance, set during a doomed wartime mission in the Pacific., Bataan brilliantly transforms one of America’s most ignominious wartime defeats into a paean to courage and perseverance. The time is 1942: a ragtag group of American and Filipino troops stand their ground in Bataan, hoping in vain to stave off the invading Japanese hordes. Robert Taylor gives an outstanding performance as the acting officer, who overlooks the character flaws of his men–especially incognito criminal Lloyd Nolan–and in so doing brings out the best of them during the worst of the battle. Though they know they’re doomed when pilot George Murphy crashes in an attempt to fly off and fetch backup troops, the survivors bravely fight on until only Taylor is left. The film’s last image is of Taylor grimly firing off round after round, yelling “Come on, you dirty…(we don’t hear what he says, but we know what it is). MGM’s Bataan ranks with Paramount’s Wake Island as one of the best of the earlier war films; both deal with a battle lost, but both emerge as triumphant morale boosters. Bataan is compromised only by the obvious studio exteriors and the occasionally corny dialogue., Above average WWII actioner starring Robert Taylor as the commander of a group of American soldiers making an heroic last stand in the Philippines as they attempt to protect the back of the retreating American army., Tay Garnett’s WWII film is based on a true story about 13 men left to fight against the advancing troops of the Japanese army. Robert Taylor stars as the sergeant in charge, Bill Dane, who, along with Lt Steve Bentley and Cpl Jake Feingold, is on a mission to stop the Japanese from building a vital bridge into the Bataan peninsula. But it becomes increasingly apparent that none of them is likely to survive., An American patrol guarding a Philippine road during World War II hope to be relieved by the besieged Allied forces before being overtaken, but remain standing against the encroaching enemy, even as they are picked off one by one., Robert Taylor leads a do-or-die mission during World War II in Bataan (1943), co-starring George Murphy and Thomas Mitchell., Second World War action drama with Robert Taylor as the leader of a group of American soldiers protecting the retreating US army in the Philippines at the cost of their own lives., Robert Taylor gives an outstanding performance as a military commander in this blistering tale of courage and perseverance during a doomed wartime mission in the Pacific.
