Richard Gere stars as a father immersed in his daughter’s quest to become a spelling bee champion., Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s drama uses America’s obsession with the National Spelling Bee as its framework to explore the spiritual life of a Jewish-American family. Richard Gere plays Saul Neumann, a professor at Berkeley specialising in Jewish theology and the Kabbalah. Juliette Binoche plays his emotionally wounded wife Miriam, and Max Minghella plays his son Aaron who rebels by joining the Hare Krishna set. But Saul, icy and distant from his family, pours his hopes into young daughter Eliza (an outstanding Flora Cross) who can ‘see’ how to spell words in an almost mystical way. As her father pushes her through the National Spelling Bee rounds, the film asks if a family torn apart by such differences can be reconciled., Intense professor Saul drives his son in his music practice. When Aaron disobeys his father, Saul switches his attention to Eliza, the quiet daughter who has just won a spelling contest., Adapted from the novel by Myla Goldberg, Bee Season tells the story of a family whose turmoil is brought to the surface by a young girl’s unexpected talent. Eleven-year-old Eliza (Flora Cross) is the invisible element of her family unit — her mother and father (played by Juliette Binoche and Richard Gere) are both consumed with work and busy avoiding their faltering marriage. Her brother, praised for musical genius, is wrapped up in his own adolescent life. Eliza ignites not only a spark that makes her visible but one that sets into motion a revolution in her family dynamic when she wins a spelling bee. Finding an emotional outlet in the power of words and in the spiritual mysticism that he sees at work in her unparalleled gift, Eliza’s father pours all of his energy into helping his daughter become spelling bee champion, further distancing himself from his wife and son. A religious studies professor, he sees the opportunity as not only a distraction from his life but as an answer to his own crisis of faith. His vicarious path to God, real or imagined, leads to an obsession with Eliza’s success and he begins teaching her secrets of the Kabbalah. Now preparing for the National Spelling Bee, and with her family spreading further and further into four separate directions, Eliza looks on as a new secret of her family’s hidden turmoil seems to be revealed with each new word she spells., Problems and resentments plague a seemingly content American family as the daughter (Flora Cross) progresses to the National Spelling Bee in this moving drama, which delves into spirituality and healing wounds. Richard Gere and Juliette Binoche star as the parents, and newcomers Max Minghella (son of director Anthony Minghella) and Cross are impressive as their children. Directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, from a script by Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal, who adapted Myla Goldberg’s novel., Eliza Naumann (Flora Cross) demonstrates such an amazing gift for spelling any word given to her that her father Saul insists on coaching her himself. But as Eliza’s success continues, Saul’s newfound devotion grows causing huge changes for the entire family!
