Ambitious and offbeat collection of five stories spanning 6,000 years. Robin Williams plays five different men, all trying to find happiness in their respective periods in history. From the Bronze Age through Roman times, the Middle Ages, the 16th century and the modern day, various themes are seen to recur throughout the ages, This strange, episodic series of fables features Robin Williams who plays Hector in each of the five historical vignettes. The film begins on a beach as the modern Hector’s wife tells him five short stories. In the first he is a Bronze Age caveman who loses his whole family to raiders. In the second, he is a Roman slave in love with another slave. He has a really stupid master who wants him to participate in a suicide pact. In the third he is a medieval wanderer trying to return to his home country. He travels with a luscious widow who tries to coerce him to stay in her country. In the fourth, he is shipwrecked on a desolate African coast. There he tries to make up to his former lover while the rest of the crew tries to survive. In the last, he is a divorced New York entrepreneur who spends a weekend with his estranged children. In each of the episodes Hector is a rather simple man who seeks love, family, and bonding. Each episode involves some sort of journey., Bill Forsyth had to battle for the release of this film, which was intended to crack the American movie market. Robin Williams plays Hector, an ordinary man with ordinary concerns – food, family and shoes that fit – appearing in five ages of man, from slave to medieval trader to modern New Yorker., Writer-director Bill Forsyth (“Local Hero”) concocted this tale of a gentle Everyman (Robin Williams) meandering through time.
