Robert Newton exhibits absolutely no shame in his portrayal of the title character in Blackbeard the Pirate. If you thought that Newton’s “Arr, matey”s got out of hand in Treasure Island, wait til you see this one. The plot concerns the efforts of the British admiralty to bring Blackbeard to justice. To that end, officer Keith Andes allows himself to be abducted by the pirate’s minions. Also captured by Blackbeard is luscious Linda Darnell, the adopted daughter of Andes’ superior Torin Thatcher. When it turns out that everyone is being double-crossed by the insidious Thatcher, all Technicolor hell breaks loose. William Bendix costars as Blackbeard’s chief henchman, appearing to be a model of subtlety when compared to his costar. Future “Beverly Hillbilly” Irene Ryan has some nice moments as Linda Darnell’s lady-in-waiting., Swashbuckling adventure on the high seas in the 17th century, when the Spanish Main was plagued with piracy. The English monarch, enraged by the infamous buccaneer Blackbeard’s interference with legitimate commerce, dispatches Sir Henry Morgan to confront the pirate and his crew of cut-throats. But Blackbeard now holds a hostage: he has kidnapped Sir Henry’s bride., On the 17th-century Spanish Main, a British surgeon attempts to stop a feared buccaneer by allowing himself to be kidnapped by the man’s crew, only to discovers that the menace has also abducted a rival’s daughter., In 1674, ‘reformed’ pirate Sir Henry Morgan is a high official in Jamaica, but Edward Maynard hopes to win a large reward by proving Morgan still dabbles in piracy. Maynard goes undercover as ship’s surgeon with a Morgan henchman…who’s been supplanted by notorious Blackbeard himself. Also on the ship is Edwina Mansfield, seemingly a damsel in distress, to whom there’s much more than meets the eye.
