Philippine filmmaker Lav Diaz offers a complex study of art, morality, and spirituality in this drama. In Siglo Ng Pagluluwal (aka Century of Birthing), Diaz follows three parallel narrative threads at once. A filmmaker (Perry Dizon) sits at his computer as he edits his most recent film, but feels blocked and uncertain of what to do, emotionally burdened by a long history of incomplete and abandoned works. As the filmmaker struggles with his footage and confers with his friends and colleagues, we see the movie he’s working on, concerning a nun who leaves life in the church behind to explore the secular world. And in the film’s third story, a photographer (Roeder Camanag) happens upon a church that’s home to a small religious cult, where a charismatic but disturbed man of faith (Joel Torre) presides over a band of mostly female followers, and as the photographer observes their actions and asks questions about their beliefs, he throws their actions into a new relief. Running nearly six hours, Century of Birthing received its North American premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
