Director Noah Thomson, a former young disciple of a controversial Christian cult that was wracked by child sex-abuse allegations, interviews former members throughout Central and South America. Also includes archival footage., The Children of God (later known as The Family of Love and then simply The Family) was a radical religious group formed in 1968 by David Berg during the first flowering of the “Jesus People” movement. The Children of God’s beliefs were an unusual combination of apocalyptic prophecy, spirit channeling, social activism and embracing God’s love in all ways, and they believed in reaching out to new followers through unusual means, including “flirty fishing,” in which female members of the group would use sex as a means of bringing men into the organization. Many Children of God members lived in communes, with the children watched over by “nannies” appointed by the group while the adults went about their activities. In the 1980’s, the Children of God were hit with accusations that many of the children in the group has been sexually abused (Berg wrote tracts for the group promoting sexual contact between children and adults, through the Family has since repudiated the practice, as well as discontinuing “flirty fishing”), and it was one of the first groups to attract the attention of cult deprogrammers. Filmmaker Noah Thomson was raised in a Children of God commune in Brazil but has since left the group, and in 2006 he set out to reconnect with as many of his siblings as he could, as well as the other children he was raised with. Thomson brought along a video camera, and Children of God: Lost and Found is a documentary in which he explores how he and others like him have struggled to come to terms with a childhood that was wildly unconventional at best and abusive at worst. Children of God: Lost and Found was screened as part of the 2007 Slamdance Film Festival; at one showing, current members of the Family were in attendance and tried to disrupt the presentation.
