Channel 4’s Indian Film Season explores the country’s attitudes about homosexuality via a quartet of movies with central gay themes. Chitrangada is introduced by film scholar Shohini Ghosh who situates the film in the overall career of the multi-award-winning Bengali director Rituparno Ghosh, who is well known in India for his provocative views. He is one of the few openly gay film directors in a culture and society that is predominantly conservative and prejudiced against homosexuals. Chitrangada is a multi-layered story about choreographer Rudra, who is staging a production of Rabindranath Tagore’s dance drama based on a tale from the Mahabharata. While the production is in progress, Rudra falls in love with drug addict Partho, who seemingly has no real feelings for the choreographer. Rudra then decides it’s not only his mind that needs to be shaped according to his innermost desires, but his body too. Much to the chagrin of his father, he decides to have an operation and become a woman. Rituparno Ghosh has raised eyebrows in India via his own cross-dressing explorations of sexual identity; but, following media speculation, he stated in The Telegraph of Kolkata that he was happy with his own gender fluidity and had no plans to follow Rudra’s reassignment, but would be the first to let everyone know if he changed his mind.
