The Big Problem
Community-police relations are dramatized in this episode. Friday: Jack Webb. Gannon: Harry Morgan. Jones: Georg Stanford Brown. John: Roy Glenn. Elsa: Maidie Norman., Sgt. Joe Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Bill Gannon (Harry Morgan) are addressing a group of citizens on the importance of communication between cops and the community when a young black man objects to Friday’s objection to the term “police brutality” (which Friday views as a useless catch-all) and storms out of the meeting. Though an older black couple apologizes for the youngster’s sensitivity, the next day they find themselves filing an official complaint after being pulled over as burglary suspects following the previous night’s meeting. Looking into the situation, Friday concludes that the couple was stopped because not only did their vehicle match the description of the suspect’s vehicle, but a new television in the back seat made the officers especially suspicious. These facts were never explained to the couple, a situation which once again drives home Friday’s plea for better communication. Shortly after the incident is clarified, the young man who had stormed out of the meeting is pulled over and — after police find a traffic warrant on his record — barricades himself in his apartment out of fear of police brutality. Friday and Gannon promise the suspect that they will go easy on him, and the situation is peacefully resolved.
