Fantasmas en Buenos Aires (Ghosts in Buenos Aires) is sublimely suited to the talents of Argentine film favorites Pepe Arias and Zully Moreno. Predicated on a famous “urban legend,” the film casts Moreno as a mysterious young woman, sitting alone at a table in a fancy nightclub. Hoping to make time with our heroine, vacationing bank clerk Arias sits next to her, engages her in conversation, then accidentally spills wine on her gown. Offering to drive Moreno home, he drops her off, as requested, in front of a cemetery — whereupon she promptly disappears. The next day, Arias inquires as to the whereabouts of Moreno, only to learn that she’s been dead for two years. Later on, the girl’s body is exhumed — whereupon it is discovered that she is wearing the selfsame wine-stained gown! Normally, this is where the “Resurrection Mary” legend comes to an end; but in Fantasmas en Buenos Aires, it is only a prelude for a complex comedy-mystery involving a gang of clever counterfeiters.
