Following up on her graphic exploration of female sexuality in her 1999 opus Romance, Catherine Breillat returns to familiar territory with this look at sisterly jealousy and burgeoning sexuality. Elena (Roxane Mesquida) is a beautiful fifteen year old lass who coerces her rather rotund twelve year old sister Anais (Anais Reboux) along as she looks for boys in the seaside town where they are vacationing. Elena cruelly makes her sister while scarfing down a banana split watch as she kisses a handsome college-aged Italian lad on the beach. Later, Elena orders Anais to sleep as the same lothario appears in her bedroom window. Wrestling with her own newly discovered desires, Anais listens as her sister loses her virginity. When their parents get wind of Elena’s tryst, their furious mother (Arsinee Khanjian) drives them home on a drive that grows ever more nightmarish.
