Kate Fleming was a Seattle-based actress who enjoyed a successful and award-winning career narrating audio books. Fleming was also a Lesbian who shared a home with her long-time life partner Charlene Strong. In late 2006, a severe rainstorm led to a flash flood in Fleming’s neighborhood, and she became trapped in her basement as she tried to save some equipment from the small recording studio she maintained in her house. Fleming was eventually found by a rescue team and rushed to a hospital, but to no avail, as she never regained consciousness and died soon afterward. To her horror and disgust, Strong was not permitted to be with Fleming during the last moments of her life — the state of Washington does not recognize same-sex marriage and consequently the hospital staff did not acknowledge Strong as a family member. Strong also found herself shut out of the funeral process for similar reasons, and the anger and humiliation she felt led her to become a vocal and passionate activist for full marriage equality, speaking out on behalf of matrimonial rights for gay and lesbian couples so that no one would have to feel the pain she experienced. For My Wife is a documentary by David Rothmiller that chronicles Charlene Strong’s transition from the manager of a dental office to a champion for civil rights. Featuring music by Moby and Peter Buck, For My Wife was an official selection at the 2009 Palm Springs International Film Festival.
