An examination of physician-assisted suicide, including whether it should be a right for terminally ill people and others at the end of their lives. The documentary features Dignitas, a non-profit Swiss organization that helps people die, a couple facing the decision and a Chicago native who travels to Switzerland intending to end his life., In this documentary, filmmaker John Zaritsky examines the Dignitas institution in Switzerland, the only place in the world where citizens from any country can come to receive assistance in committing suicide. Asserting that the ending of one’s life is a basic human right, Dignitas’ founder, Ludwig Minelli, has indirectly assisted in the suicides of over 500 people from over 40 countries. The film follows new clients who wish to end their lives with Dignitas’ help, such as George, a man with heart disease who wants to forgo the increasingly unbearable pain that lies before him. His wife of 50 years, Betty, is completely healthy and loves her children and grandchildren, and yet she is determined to die alongside her husband, unable to imagine a life without him.
