Filmmaker Raymonde Provencher documents the little-known plight of children who are abducted, trained as killers, and forced into armed combat. Often female, these child soldiers are sometimes forced to marry their captors. Filmed on location in Uganda., After Ugandan president Tito Okello was removed from office by rebel forces in early 1986, the nation was plagued with political instability and a number of guerilla factions fought for control. One of the most sinister was the Lord’s Resistance Army, a group led by Joseph Kony who claimed to speak on behalf of God and had an unusual way of recruiting troops — kidnapping children and forcing them to fight. While most of Kony’s conscripts were boys, his underlings also kidnapped girls, and many of them had to deal with sexual abuse as well as being forced into a life of violence. Grace, Milly and Lucy are three Ugandan women who survived their years in the LRA and have become advocates for other former child soldiers, providing care and rehabilitation for other children forced to fight and raising awareness about this despicable practice. Filmmaker Raymonde Provencher tells the story of these women, their hellish experiences as soldiers and their work to see others don’t suffer the same fate in the documentary Grace, Milly, Lucy . . . Child Soldiers. Produced by the National Film Board of Canada, the film was an official selection at the 2010 Silverdocs Documentary Film Festival.
