The programme journeys through epic sieges and pitched battles and looks at how engineers have used ingenuity and breakthrough materials to counter different military threats., The series concludes with an overview of how terrain has been used and modified for offensive and defensive purposes. Included: Hadrian’s Wall, which was built by the Romans in northern England; the Great Wall of China; the mountain fortress of Masada in southern Israel and the rampart the Romans built to conquer it; Crusader castles like Krak de Chevaliers, which featured multiple layers of walls and defenses; the rooftops and alleyways of Baghdad.
