It’s 1950 and it’s a make or break weekend for Tyrone Purvis, the proprietor of the Honeydripper Lounge. Deep in debt, Tyrone decides to lay off his long-time blues singer Bertha Mae, and hires a famous guitar player. Another man looking for job at the club is Sonny Blake, a youngster with nothing to his name but big dreams and a guitar case in his hand. When he gets rejected by Tyrone, he is intercepted by the corrupt local Sheriff, arrested for vagrancy and rented out as an unpaid cotton picker to the highest bidder. But when Tyrone’s ace-in-the-hole fails to materialize at the train station, his desperation leads him back to Sonny., Writer-director John Sayles’ rocking, rolling, roiling and rollicking riff on music, racism, romance and religion, featuring an outstanding soundtrack and a superb cast. Danny Glover stands out as the owner of a failing juke joint in 1950s rural Alabama, where the former piano whiz has one last shot at saving his troubled roadhouse. Things are far from harmonious in the small segregated town of Harmony, Alabama, as ageing club owner Tyrone ‘Pine Top’ Purvis tries to save his failing nightclub, The Honeydripper Lounge, from being taken over by local gangsters. When big-shot guitarist Guitar Sam, specially hired to save the club’s fortunes, fails to turn up for a gig, old Pine Top finds himself with no option but to replace him with a young unknown guitarist fresh into town., Tyrone (Danny Glover) is the proprietor of the Honeydripper juke joint. When business at the once-popular club begins to trail off and Tyrone hires unpredictable electric guitarist Sonny (Gary Clark Jr.) against his better judgment, Tyrone’s last-ditch bid to draw in crowds during harvest time has surprising results that neither desperate Tyrone nor the ambitious Sonny could have ever anticipated. Blues guitarist Keb’ Mo’ co-stars in the film, which was written and directed by John Sayles.
