Kimberly Williams-Paisley and Annabella Sciorra star in this affecting story of a schoolteacher whose charmed life turns into a nightmare when she becomes the victim of identity theft. Based on a true story. Justin: Jason London. Barry: Stephen Strachan., Based on a true story and a subject topical on both sides of the Atlantic, Kimberly Williams stars as Michelle Brown, who one day innocently hands over her credit card details to rental clerk Connie Volkos (Annabella Sciorra). But when Brown starts getting bills for services and goods she never bought, she realises what has happened. But then her nightmare begins, arrested for default, she must prove she is not the guilty party and her fight leads her all the way to the US Senate, where she fights for tighter laws on identity theft., An innocent young woman’s life spirals out of control after she is accused of crimes committed by a woman who stole her identity. Michelle Brown is shocked when a stranger assumes her name and quickly buys hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of services and merchandise, before using cosmetic surgery to try and actually become Michelle. With no one believing the real Michelle, and the authorities refusing to move fast enough to help, she fights back, takes matters into her own hands and finally faces her nemesis., Based on a true story (and all the more terrifying because of it!), this made for cable movie begins as Michelle Brown (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) fills out an ordinary rental form. Looking on enviously is penniless Connie Volkos (Annabella Sciorra), who can’t understand why there are “haves” and “have-nots” in the world (but who has never put in the necessary work to become a “have”). When Michelle briefly lays down her credit card, it is stolen by Connie–who subsequently steals Michelle’s identity as well, toting up $50,000 in purchases in Michelle’s name. When Michelle tries to have Connie arrested, she finds herself at the mercy of the blind-deaf-dumb American credit system and is herself accused of theft! Desperate to win back her reputation (not to mention her own name!), Michelle pleads her cast before the US Senate in July of 2000, resulting–belatedly in her case–in the passage of bill HR 1731, with imposes stronger penalties for stealing one’s identity and puts in tighter safeguards against people being victimized by such thieves. Even so, the film underlines the sobering fact that what happened to Michelle happens to someone else at a rate of once every six minutes!
