Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion

This story of police corruption and ultimate abuses of power finds the policeman (Gian Maria Volonte) murdering his girlfriend Augusta (Florinda Bolkan) in the opening scene. He is promoted to chief of police and flashbacks explain his relationship with the murdered woman. As detectives try to solve the mystery, the chief admits to his involvement and declares himself above the law and punishment. He is witnessed leaving the crime scene by an anarchist adept in pyrotechnics who has his own reasons to hide from the law., This melodrama about the dangers of Fascist demagogy won an Oscar as best foreign film.
