A 19th century free black woman travels to Nauvoo, Illinois, to heed the call of Mormonism.After the assassination of religious leader and founder Joseph Smith, she develops a complex and enduring friendship with his widow and participates actively in the Latter Day Saint movement., Director Chantelle Squires’s historical drama is based on the life of Jane Elizabeth Manning James, who is one of the best-documented African American Mormons of the 19th century. After travelling to Nauvoo, Illinois, to heed the call of Joseph Smith (the founder of Mormonism), Manning (Danielle Deadwyler) establishes a complex friendship with his wife Emma Smith (Emily Goss).
