Canadian director Xavier Dolan’s drama tracks, through the course of the 1990s, the relationship between a 35-year-old teacher and his girlfriend after he tells her he is transsexual. Laurence’s transformation is partially explored through the key women in her life, her long-time partner Frédérique Bellair, known as Fred, and Laurence’s mother Julienne. And while Dolan doesn’t shy away from the incomprehension, discrimination and aggression Laurence faces, the focus is definitely on her, sometimes awkward, transition to a new normality. The film won Dolan the Queer Palm at Cannes 2012, and Clément also picked up the Un Certain Regard – Best Actress award at the festival.
