The Racoon
Although her father advises against it, Laura tries to tame a raccoon. Laura: Melissa Gilbert. Charles: Michael Landon. Caroline: Karen Grassle. Mary: Melissa Sue Anderson. Dr. Baker: Kevin Hagen., When Laura (Melissa Gilbert) adopts a baby raccoon whom she names Jasper, Charles (Michael Landon) gently warns her that the animal may not ever be domesticated. Things take a perilous turn when Jacob bites both Laura and another child and escapes into the woods. With the animal nowhere to be found, there is no way of telling whether or not the children have contacted rabies., When Mary accidentally breaks Laura’s glass doll, she brings home a raccoon to cheer Laura up. Laura keeps him and prides herself on teaching him tricks and his docile behaviour. To her dismay, food aggression and the many kids at school cause her pet raccoon, Jasper, to bite her and Jack and then run away. Afraid of losing her pet for good, she makes Mary promise to keep it a secret, but when the chickens are disturbed by a rabid raccoon, Mary must break the bad news to her father., When Laura’s doll breaks, Mary gives her a baby raccoon. When it bites the Ingalls’ dog, Charles watches for signs of rabies, and a tearful Mary reveals Jasper also bit Laura.
