Ultimately, Mulcahy’s ordeal by fire results in a lifesaving emergency tracheotomy–performed via radioed instructions from the 4077th., Father Mulcahy decides to volunteer to visit the front lines, where he sees the horrors of war firsthand and has to overcome his own fears to save somebody’s life.
