Charles describes the 4077th in a vitriolic tape to his parents; Klinger concocts a new scheme to get out of the army; BJ has a little fun at Charles’ expense., Major Charles Winchester desperately wants to leave the 4077th and tape records a letter to his wealthy father begging him to use his influence to get him transferred to the U.S., Hawkeye and B.J. find a taped letter from Winchester to his parents asking them to get him back to the states. Hawkeye and B.J react with an ingenious practical joke., The camp, caught up in tension and nerves, creates a bonfire to release their pressure. Meanwhile, Sidney Freedman is depressed over a young soldier who blames him for his injuries., Only the aristocratic Charles Winchester (David Ogden Stiers) would disdain pen and paper to write a letter home to his parents, choosing instead to tape-record his message. Hoping that his influential family will pull strings to get him transferred, Charles bitterly describes the 4077th as a “cesspool”, prompting retaliatory action from Hawkeye (Alan Alda) and B.J. (Mike Farrell).
